Ways To Learn Modern Hebrew

By Katy Kline

Hebrew went through a time of being considered a dead language that was only really used by religious leaders and academics. Its revival as a spoken language was linked to the Zionist movement and the founding of the modern state of Israel, where it is the official language today. If you want to learn modern Hebrew, it is easier now than ever before.

In the past, languages were often learned by studying textbooks without having the opportunity to hear the language being spoken. Now there are other ways of learning how to speak, read and write a language and Hebrew is no exception. A combination of books, audio and interactive lessons provide the basis for many courses enabling those who want to learn to be exposed to the spoken and written language in a well constructed manner. Interactive online learning is one of the latest approaches.

Internet resources vary in quality and some research may be needed to determine which courses offer the most effective way of learning. Everyone learns in a different way too, so what suits one individual may not suit another. What is important, however, is for a course to be well constructed, with quality content, with each step being reinforced.

Courses usually consist of various levels. Those geared towards beginners focus on the alphabet (Aleph Bet) and each session focuses on both expanding vocabulary and creating building blocks for learning the verb system. The idea is for students to be able to hold a basic conversation using simple words related to common situations experienced every day.

Virtual classes provide a supportive environment for students. They can log in and chat with a well qualified teacher and other students. The groups usually consist of six to eight students and they practice together with one another, building up confidence along the way. This is a supportive environment where mistakes can be made without embarrassment as everyone is learning together.

Information about prices of courses, dates and times are available at online websites. These vary considerably with some even being offered for free. Costs can be an issue when investing in a language course but it is often money well spent. One cannot expect to achieve anything at a useful level in a language without spending some money.

Sometimes an online evaluation test will establish whether one should register for the beginner, intermediate or advanced course. Each course consists of a number of sessions. Registration online is possible and once this is completed, students may be sent various materials depending on the nature of the course.

Learning a language is not an easy task and does not happen without some dedication. Research has showed that daily practice is needed for at least three months in order to develop muscles in the mouth to properly articulate the unfamiliar sounds of an unknown language. Choose from current methods available today to learn modern Hebrew and you will be surprised at how soon you will be able to hold a basic conversation.
